Ain’t it nice to know that no matter how tough you got it, there’s always some poor sap whose life is more balled up than your own? Well, you’re in luck, pal, because I’m about to introduce you to one of the sorriest killjoys around, right along with the people who make him that way.
Eddie
Being on the receiving end of a demon’s ire is no stroll through Cooper’s Park, believe you me, but even if he wasn’t cursed, Eddie would still be one of the unluckiest bastards around—unlucky at cards, unlucky with dames, and unlucky in keeping his nose clean. He’s up to his ears in gambling debts, and he’s managed to piss off the heads of every crime family (demon and mortal alike) at one time or another. He’s been beaten and kicked and even killed, but he always comes back for more, like a dog what don’t know no better. He’s in Alphonse Aligheri’s pocket, but he’s looking for a way out. In his heart, though, he knows he’ll never escape.
Sophie
Dames like Sophie, they’re a a dime a dozen, unless of course they manage to twist you around their pinky finger. Sophie was once Eddie’s girl, but now she spends her nights with Danny O’Brien. She knows how to use her charm to get in good with men—like O’Brien and Eddie—and she’s got connections that make her a valuable resource to those seeking information.
Danny O’Brien
If there’s one thing gives me the shakes worse than a demon, it’s a mortal who manages to climb the ranks of the Aligheri organization and strike out on his own. Once no more than a lowly thug, O’Brien used cunning and violence to carve out his own territories. Because he’s “just another human,” most demons see him as little more than an amusing upstart. Maybe—just maybe—that’s just the way O’Brien likes it.
Tony
Let’s say you got the horns to double-cross Big Al. Chances are, you’ll soon be visited by the demon’s bodyguard and enforcer, Tony. And chances are, if Tony calls upon you, you’ll be visiting a sawbones or the morgue soon after.
Bruno Roarke
Must be tough being a little dog in a big dog’s junkyard, but that’s what old Bruno deals with every bleeding day. The head of the second most powerful demon family in the city, Bruno deals in boxing, betting, and bad booze.
Alphonse “Big Al” Aligheri
For a demon, Big Al’s a nice enough fella, and he’s willing to offer favors to those in need if it gets him what he wants. For whatever reason, the head of the Aligheri family has a bit of a soft spot in his cold, dead heart for Eddie. Nothing happens in the city without Big Al knowing about it—or so he thinks.
